We took the ferry to edition, the Jersey side and a trolley to the top of the Palisades.
It was open country without any houses. We walked up a road for about half a mile and came to my heroes, a clump of woods. We followed a narrow path for another 10 minutes with silence all around us except for the twittering of a bird now and then, and came out on an open hillside with a panoramic view of a valley. In the foreground, scattered here and there stood a few simple and picturesque little houses with fruit trees in between. To the right, among taller trees, could be seen more substantially built rustic stone houses. It certainly looked like my idea of an barthes essay, artists' colony. - MAN RAY, Self Portrait. During the who are essay 1890s, the hillside community of Ridgefield, New Jersey, emerged as a noteworthy locale for growing numbers of dissertation outline 1 artists, many of whom sought a quiet, bucolic retreat from the noise and who are essay, crowds of harlem renaissance Manhattan. Located atop the Palisades, across the Hudson River from my heroes Morningside Heights in New York City, Ridgefield was incorporated as a borough in 1892. With immigrants moving there as early as the seventeenth century, it was the second English settlement in New Jersey. Investment Management! Artists and writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were primarily attracted to the Heights section near Ridgefield's borders with Cliffside Park and Fairview, commonly designated as Grantwood (figs. 203, 44). As recalled by former longtime resident William Monaghan, this bucolic area was once fertile with woods and fields and wells and paths of mystery. Along streets named Studio Road, Art Lane, and Sketch Place, creative minds congregated.
Today, almost all of the artists' homes and vacation shacks have been bulldozed and replaced with larger houses. Only these street names and my heroes essay, a few original homes remain, along with the panoramic vistas, stretching beyond the meadows to paper discrimination, the Watchung Mountains. One of the first artists to who are essay, settle in term gender discrimination this area was the my heroes illustrator, portraitist, and genre painter James E. Maxfield (1848-?), who built a house on the southwest corner of Studio Road and Art Lane that still exists. Maxfield's home became the headquarters for edition the Country Sketch Club, founded by his friend Van Dearing Perrine (1869-1955), which was officially formed in 1897 and who are essay, flourished from 1898 to 1912. A student at the National Academy of Design, Perrine met Maxfield around 1895 and confessed his academic difficulties. The elder Maxfield suggested that Perrine retreat to Ridgefield in order to practice sketching directly from nature, a practice that was not sponsored by the Academy.
In exchange for use of Maxfield's property, Perrine built a rustic bungalow, which served as a dwelling and studio for roland barthes narrative essay the two artists. Perrine's biographer Lolita L. W. Flockhart described his initial enthusiastic encounter with Maxfield's Ridgefield property as follows: When Van first saw this property - a lovely woodland on my heroes essay, the slope of gender discrimination a hill above the peaceful Hackensack Valley - patches of dogwood bloom shone among the elms and oaks, not yet in full leaf. For several years he had been cut off by pavements from the who are earth that he loved, enslaved by artificial city ways . Now he came back to the pantheism of his childhood . The loneliness that his soul craved. received satisfaction in the mysterious lights and shades on the slopes of Ridgefield. Returning to the National Academy School in 1896 with some of his Ridgefield sketches, Perrine kindled the enthusiasm of fellow students; soon on the weekends a sanguine group were invading the hills and dells of Ridgefield, the nucleus of the Country Sketch Club. Among these friends were the artists Maurice Sterne (1878-1957) and Clem B. Davis, Perrine's city flatmates. In his memoirs, Sterne recalled his camaraderie in Ridgefield with urban realist William Glackens (1870-1938) and the charming watercolorist George Overbury Pop Hart (1868-1933), a resident of nearby Coytesville who sang wonderful songs. Also drawn to the natural beauty of Ridgefield were fellow National Academy students Alfred H. Maurer (1868-1932) and Samuel A. Weiss (1874-?).
Others who came to Ridgefield and would become involved with the Country Sketch Club were Albert L. Groll (1866-1952), Edmond Weill (1877-?), Grant Wright (1865-1935), Ernest David Roth (1879-1964), E. Tracey Noe, and George Glenn Newell (1870-1947). One of the club's Ridgefield outings was picturesquely characterized by dissertation 1 Perrine's biographer: Later in the season - on a beautiful June day in 1897 - the group followed Perrine to their choice outdoor sketching field. Cattle browsed in the lush grass, a woods in the background provided grateful shade, and before them stretched a long view over who are the valley to dissertation 1, the misty purple mountains beyond the river. The club's objectives were defined as the encouragement of individual work among members and the fostering of an art native to this country. Its membership grew rapidly, and in 1898 its first exhibition was held. The following year's well-received show at the National Academy of Design was organized as a benefit to raise funds for a new clubhouse in essay Ridgefield. Edition! In the foreword for the exhibition catalogue, Edmond Weill articulated the group's desire for a permanent home where students with limited means and who are essay, time can paint and narrative essay, study, unrestrained from the drudgery of the classroom. He characterized the current clubhouse as being situated on the slope of my heroes a steep hill, overlooking a most picturesque part of the Hackensack valley, from where the surrounding country stretches out in a broad and edition, beautiful expanse. My Heroes! [11 ] A reviewer for The Art Collector observed that its members, working away for edition a couple of years, had caused the Academy to start quaking in its very shoes. My Heroes! Contributing nonacademic paintings as fair and wholesome and sincere as a meadow lit by harlem the sun, the club members offered urban and rural subjects that reflected their dual headquarters in New York City and who are, Ridgefield. Van Dearing Perrine was singled out for the reckless sincerity [of] his land and sea work (fig.
204). Perrine eventually became known as the Thoreau of the Palisades for his somber, turbulent canvases of massive rock, sky, and water painted between 1902 and 1912. A turning point in the history of the Country Sketch Club occurred in 1901 with the renaissance thesis presentation of a large show of 139 paintings and sketches by twenty-four artists at who are my heroes essay, the Art Institute of Chicago. Among the exhibitors was William Glackens, whose participation has been traced to a visit made by his teacher and colleague Robert Henri (1865-1929) to Ridgefield in 1900. Residing in renaissance Fort Lee, New Jersey, Perrine himself did not exhibit and essay, became less involved; his New York City studio was no longer listed as the dissertation outline chapter 1 club's urban headquarters. My Heroes Essay! There was evidently a shift in edition emphasis from a study group and my heroes, sketching club closely engaged with Ridgefield's natural scenery to a loose confederation of cosmopolitan, progressive artist-visitors to the area, concerned primarily with exhibitions and investment management, social activities. By 1912 the club ceased to exist; many of its members, no longer students, had progressed to positions of influence and travel abroad.
Other artists associated with Ridgefield during these early years were the painter-illustrator Robert Godfrey Sprunk (1862-1912), who bought a house there in the 1890s, the Tonalist painter William Sartain (1843-1924), and the painter Robert A. Carter (1860-?). Van Skyke, illustrator for the old Life magazine, and who are my heroes, sculptor Sigurd Neandross (1871-1958) were also residents. The anarchist Emma Goldman (1869-1940) spent time in Ridgefield around 1910, enjoying its beauty and restfulness. Bernard Karfiol (1886-1952), best known for his simplified paintings of classical nudes in interiors or landscape settings, created many of his earlier works in Ridgefield, where he was discovered in 1912 by the art patron Hamilton Easter Field (1873-1922). Residing by the northwest corner of Art Lane and Studio Road until about the mid-twenties, Karfiol later recalled that Ridgefield in time became quite a lively colony of artists and writers. A second and forward-thinking chapter of Ridgefield as a bucolic artists' colony occurred during Man Ray's residence there for approximately three years between late 1912 and the end of 1915. During his first visit, in the fall of 1912, Man Ray was accompanied by his painter friend Samuel Halpert (1884-1930), who had invited him to experience an art colony on the Jersey side. Man Ray had met the edition older artist and who are essay, pioneering modernist at the Ferrer Center, a progressive educational institution in New York, and received encouragement from him to break away from academic influences. They were attracted to Ridgefield's picturesque views and edition, appreciated the my heroes essay walk through the edition woods and my heroes, cold clear water from a local well - regarded by Man Ray as symbols of an escape from the sordidness of the City. Thinking of Thoreau, he hoped to liberate himself from the constraints of civilization. Thereafter, Halpert, who came out only on the weekends, joined the full-time resident Man Ray occasionally on painting excursions in the countryside and briefly exerted a strong modernist/Fauvist influence upon the younger artist (fig.
46). The remaining room in the house was soon rented by Halpert's friend Alfred Kreymborg (1883-1966), the vanguard poet, journalist, playwright, and mandolin player who later wrote extensively about the Ridgefield colony in his autobiography Troubadour (1925). Having never received the benefits of an extended contact with nature, Kreymborg recalled falling in love with the view of the 1 Jersey meadows, striped and streaked with the Passaic and Hackensack rivers, lazily rolling away to the horizon. Man Ray was very pleased with the additional companionship of who are my heroes essay Kreymborg, believing that the term gender group might develop into who are something more than merely an artists' colony; Ridgefield, New Jersey, could become an advanced cultural center embracing all the arts. Man Ray's own aspirations to pursue writing as well as painting were further advanced by the arrival that summer in dissertation outline 1 1913 of the writer and painter Adon Lacroix (ca. 1888-ca. 1975), the companion of Man Ray's anarchist friend, the poet and sculptor Adolf Wolff (1883-1944). The inaugural issue of a short-lived magazine, The Glebe , appeared in investment management September 1913, with poetry by Wolff and Man Ray's circular design for its title (fig. 62).27 The title chosen was an appropriate synonym for the soil or mother earth, which may have also been intended to reflect their rustic surroundings in essay Ridgefield. Man Ray and Lacroix were married in May 1914 in Ridgefield's historic Old English Neighborhood Church (1793) (fig. 96). Edition! Man Ray collaborated with his new wife on two projects, which he decided to design and publish locally.
Adonism (1914) comprised woodcuts and poems that are replete with landscape imagery, suggesting the artist's immersion in essay nature as a resident of Ridgefield (fig. 99). Featuring a schematic Ridgefield landscape on its cover, A Book of Divers Writing s by Adon Lacroix (January 1915) contained a play and harlem, six poems, which were designed, calligraphed, and hand-printed by Man Ray (fig. 132). Excerpts from who are my heroes essay their writings were published in an article by Kreymborg that appeared in the Morning Telegraph on March 14, 1915. Residing on the heights of the picturesque town of Ridgefield, Man Ray and Lacroix enjoyed a glorious view of nature, [which] extends for miles and miles to the north, west, and south, beyond the Hackensack River and the Orange Mountains to Paterson.
Less than an hour from New York, they were at the heart of Nature, with all its solitude, its healthfulness, its inspiration, and its unlimited opportunities for work undisturbed - a privilege secured by these two economist dreamers for the humble sum of $8 per month. Nevertheless, the solitude of Man Ray and Lacroix was pleasantly disrupted by groups of visitors, often on roland narrative, Sundays, including fellow students from the Ferrer Center, such as the artist and musician Manuel Komroff (1890-1974), who rented a nearby property and eventually became better known as a novelist. Also associated with the essay Ferrer crowd was the visitor Max Eastman (1883-1969), founder and editor of the leftist magazine The Masses . After an introduction by Kreymborg in law research paper New York, another regular visitor was the who are essay poet Alanson Hartpence (active ca. 1908-1919), who encouraged Charles Daniel (1878-1971), a collector and saloon owner, to open a gallery of modern art, where Man Ray would have his first one-man show in 1915. Hartpence was also the instigator of a seminal New Jersey camping trip into the wild country up the Hudson - Harriman State Park. During this three-day excursion, Man Ray declared that he would no longer seek inspiration directly from nature. Instead, he announced that, upon his return to investment, Ridgefield, he would paint a series of imaginary landscapes based on essay, his recollection of the scenes and events that had taken place during the barthes essay course of the trip. Thus, this experience was a pivotal moment in Man Ray's conversion to who are my heroes, modernism and to roman law research, a greater degree of abstraction in his work. The other was Walter Arensberg (1878-1954), a prominent collector of essay modern art, who, along with Kreymborg, had already developed the idea for another collaborative avant-garde magazine venture. The first issue of Others, a vanguard poetry magazine, was published in July 1915. Kreymborg, the manuscript handler, editor, and general manager, rented a shack at Ridgefield again, and essay, the social scene became increasingly lively as pioneering poets affiliated with Others mingled with anarchists, self-styled nature lovers, and dissertation, artists taking a break from the city, including Man Ray (fig. My Heroes Essay! 205) . Orrick Johns, Mina Loy (1882-1966), Marianne Moore (1887-1972), Maxwell Bodenheim (1893-1954), Robert Alden Sanborn (188?-1962), Conrad Potter Aiken (1889-1973), Mary Carolyn Davies, Horace Holley (1887-1960), and Skipwith Cannell (1887-1957) were among the dissertation outline chapter writers who gathered at Ridgefield on Sundays with picnic lunches and, at times, manuscripts. Having worked mostly in isolation, they appreciated these opportunities to my heroes, come together and talk shop. Among the first and most significant contributors to Others , and a regular visitor to Ridgefield, was William Carlos Williams (1883-1963), the doctor-poet from nearby Rutherford, New Jersey, whom Kreymborg characterized as artist, scientist, and edition, madman. As he expressed to his wife, Man Ray desired to be spared a third winter in the country, exclaiming that he had had enough of this back-to-earth life - no more woodchopping or melting snow for who are water, for me. Nevertheless, Man Ray had laid the modernist foundations for roman paper his future work as he developed the theoretical, formalist basis for his paintings as two-dimensional arrangements. Who Are Essay! Furthermore, Man Ray's desire, sparked during these years, to work from the imagination paved the way for his increasingly conceptual approach to art making from barthes 1917 onward. During the 19205 and beyond, another, less cohesive group of artists, writers, and musicians succeeded the circle of Man Ray, Kreymborg, and my heroes essay, the Others coterie. Still remaining in Ridgefield in the Sketch Place area were Manuel Komroff, as well as the novelist, radical journalist, and associate editor of The Masses, Floyd Dell (1887-1969), a resident since the First World War. They were joined by the Impressionist painter William Tisch (1879-1972), a commercial artist who often created plein air landscape watercolors without any distraction of his hometown, in which he had settled in I925 . Harlem Renaissance Thesis! The attractions of Ridgefield remained unchanged for many years: primarily the availability of inexpensive studio space amidst a town replete with farmland and beautiful wooded hillsides but within an easy commute to New York City. You have Googled example resume templates, perfected your formatting, and added appropriate action words. Everything is in the correct tense, in reverse chronological order, and kept to two pages or less. What else should you think about for an amazing social work resume? Whether you are a clinical or macro social worker, student, new professional, or have been in dissertation chapter 1, the field for 30 years, these essential tips will keep your resume ready to send out to your future employer. Who Are My Heroes Essay. 1. Roland Essay. Objective or Professional Summary? Let’s start at the beginning. Who Are. I am not a fan of the objective, and neither are many hiring managers. If they are reading your resume, they already know you are seeking a position with them.
Generally, an roman law research, objective is who are essay used by someone who has recently graduated or has very little experience. If you have plenty of roman paper, social work experience, you should consider using a professional summary. This is one to three sentences at the beginning of essay, your resume that help describe the value you bring as a social worker through your skills and experience. This helps your reader know right away if you will be a good fit for the hiring organization. It is much easier for roman law research a hiring manager to find that value in a short paragraph than trying to piece it together from a lengthy history of professional experience and who are my heroes essay education. DON’T: Objective: Seeking a social work position within a facility where I can utilize my experience to edition the benefit of my employer as well as gain knowledge and professional growth. DO: Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 6+ years experience in medical and mental health settings, working with diverse populations in private practice, health care, outpatient, and inpatient treatment settings. 2. Don’t assume your reader already knows what you do. This is one of the biggest mistakes I see when reviewing resumes. My Heroes. Write your resume as if the person reading it has no idea what you do. Really? Yes! This will help you to be descriptive about your experience.
For some reason, some social workers are not very good at tooting their own horns. Your resume is exactly the place you need to brag about what an amazing professional you are. Don’t assume that because your title was “Outpatient Therapist,” the reader of your resume will know exactly what you did. Be descriptive. If you worked in a position for five years but don’t list one relevant accomplishment, that is a red flag for a hiring manager. Describing accomplishments is more than simply listing your job duties. These are the contributions you have made in your career that would encourage an organization to hire you. Questions you can ask yourself to help remember your accomplishments include: How did you help your clients? Did you create a new form or program based on the needs of the client population? Did your therapy skills reduce the relapse rate in your agency? Did you save your organization money by coming up with a cost-saving idea?
Were you selected for special projects, committees, or task forces? Even if the dissertation 1, only social work experience you have on your resume is your field placement, you should be able to list an accomplishment that will entice the reader to want to know more. DON’T: Completed appropriate and timely documentation according to compliance guidelines. DO: Recognized need for updated agency forms. Who Are My Heroes Essay. Developed 10 clinical and administrative forms, including no-harm contract, behavior contract, and therapist’s behavior inventory, which increased staff efficiency and productivity by 15%. 4.Quantify your accomplishments. Numbers aren’t just for term paper gender discrimination business professionals. Numbers also help with the bragging I mentioned that needs to happen on your resume.
The most convincing accomplishments are measurable and who are essay help your resume stand out from the edition, crowd. How many clients did you serve? How much money did you receive for that grant you secured for your agency? How many people do you supervise? DON’T: Wrote grants for counseling program in my heroes, schools. DO: Co-wrote School Group Experiences proposal, which received a $150,000 grant from State Foundation for renaissance thesis Health, resulting in who are my heroes essay, doubling the number of children served in harlem thesis, group counseling from 120 children to 240 children, and increasing the percentage of minority children served from 20% to my heroes essay 50% of the roman paper, total child population in group therapy.
5. Tailor your resume to the specific job. Who Are My Heroes Essay. You have heard this over roman law research and over, and it should make sense. Still, not many social workers do this correctly or at all. Many big organizations, hospitals, and university systems use online applicant tracking systems to review resumes. For example, what words do they use to describe the clients? Patients, clients, residents, victims, survivors, adults, children? Essay on My Men are My Heroes - 963 Words | Bartleby
essay talk show The television talk show is, on the face of it, a rather strange institution. We pay people to who are my heroes essay talk for us. Term Gender? Like the soap opera, the talk show is an who are my heroes, invention of twentieth century broadcasting. It takes a very old form of communication, conversation, and transforms it into renaissance, a low cost but highly popular form of information and who are my heroes essay entertainment through the institutions, practices and technologies of television. The talk show did not originate over night, at one time, or in gender one place. It developed out of forty years of my heroes essay, television practice and term paper gender discrimination antecedent talk traditions from my heroes radio, Chatauqua, vaudeville and popular theater. In defining the talk show it is useful to distinguish between television talk (unscripted presentational address) and talk shows--shows organized principally around talk. Television talk represents all the unscripted forms of conversation and direct address to investment the audience that have been present on television from the beginning. This kind of live, unscripted talk is one of the basic things that distinguishes television from film, photography, the record and essay book industries.
Television talk is almost always anchored or framed by an announcer or host figure, and harlem renaissance may be defined, in my heroes Erving Goffman's terms, as fresh talk, that is, talk that appears to be generated word by word and in a spontaneous manner. Edition? Though it is always to a degree spontaneous, television talk is also highly structured. It takes place in ritualized encounters and my heroes what the viewer sees and hears on the air has been shaped by writers, producers, stage managers and technical crews and tailored to law research paper the talk formulas of television. Thus, though it resembles daily speech, the kind of talk that occurs on television does not represent unfettered conversation. Different kinds of television talk occur at different times of the broadcast day, but much of this talk occurs outside the who are, confines of what audiences and critics have come to know as the talk show. Major talk traditions have developed around news, entertainment, and a variety of social encounters that have been reframed and management adapted for television. My Heroes Essay? For example, talk is discrimination, featured on game shows, dating or relationship shows, simulated legal encounters ( People's Court ) or shows that are essentially elaborate versions of essay, practical jokes (Candid Camera ). Roman Paper? All of who are essay, these shows feature talk but are seldom referred to as talk shows. A talk show, on edition the other hand, is as a show that is quite clearly and self-consciously built around its talk. To remain on the air a talk show must adhere to strict time and who are my heroes essay money constraints, allowing time, for investment, instance, for the advertising spots that must appear throughout the show. Essay? The talk show must begin and end within these rigid time limits and, playing to chapter an audience of millions, be sensitive to who are my heroes topics that will interest that mass audience. For its business managers the television talk show is one product among many and they are usually not amenable to anything that will interfere with profits and roland barthes narrative ratings.
This kind of show is almost always anchored by a host or team of hosts. Talk shows are often identified by the host's name in the title, an indication of the importance of the host in the history of the television talk show. Indeed, we might usefully combine the two words and talk about host/forms. A good example of the importance of the host to the form a talk show takes would be The Tonight Show. The Tonight Show premiered on NBC in 1954 with Steve Allen as its first host. My Heroes Essay? While it maintained a distinctive format and style throughout its first four decades on the air, The Tonight Show changed significantly with each successive host.
Steve Allen, Ernie Kovacs, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, and law research paper Jay Leno each took The Tonight Show in a significant new direction. Each of these hosts imprinted the show with distinctive personalities and management styles. Though many talk shows run for only weeks or months before being taken off the air, once established, talk shows and talk show hosts tend to have long runs. Who Are My Heroes? The average number of years on television for renaissance thesis, the thirty-five major talk show hosts listed at the end of this essay was eighteen years. Successful talk show hosts like Mike Wallace, Johnny Carson, and Barbara Walters bridge generations of who are my heroes, viewers. Dissertation Outline Chapter? The longevity of these super stars increases their impact on my heroes essay the forms and formats of television talk with which they are associated. Television talk shows originally emerged out of two central traditions: news and entertainment. Over time hybrid forms developed that mixed news, public affairs, and roland barthes essay entertainment. These hybrid forms occupy a middle ground position between news and my heroes entertainment, though their hosts (Phil Donahue, Oprah Winfrey, and Geraldo Rivera, for dissertation chapter 1, example) often got their training in journalism. Approximately a third of the major talk show hosts listed at the end of the essay came out of news. The other two thirds came from entertainment (comedy in particular).
Within the journalistic tradition, the names Edward R. Murrow, Mike Wallace, Ted Koppel and Bill Moyers stand out. News talk hosts like Murrow, Koppel, and my heroes Moyers do not have bands, sidekicks, or a studio audience. Their roles as talk show hosts are extensions of their roles as reporters and news commentators. Their shows appear in evening when more adult and older aged viewers are watching. Narrative Essay? The morning host teams that mix happy talk and essay information also generally come from the news background. This format was pioneered by NBC's Sylvester Pat Weaver and host Dave Garroway with the Today show in the early 1950s. Edition? Hosts who started out on my heroes essay early morning news talk shows and went on to anchor the evening news or primetime interview shows include: Walter Cronkite, John Chancellor, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, and Jane Pauley.
Each developed a distinctive style within the gender, more conversational format of their morning show. Coming from who are my heroes a journalism background but engaging in a wider arena of cultural topics were hosts like Phil Donahue, Oprah Winfrey, and Geraldo Rivera. Mixing news, entertainment, and edition public affairs, Phil Donahue established talk television, an who are, extension of the hot topic live radio call-in shows of the investment management, 1960s. Donahue himself ran a radio show in Dayton, Ohio before premiering his daytime television talk show. Donahue's Dayton show, later syndicated nationally, featured audience members talking about the social issues that affected their lives. Within the field of entertainment/variety talk, it was the my heroes, late night talk show that assumed special importance. Late night talk picked up steam when it garnered national attention during the talk show wars of the late 1960s and roman law research early 1970s. During this time Johnny Carson defended his ratings throne on the Tonight show against challengers Joey Bishop, David Frost, Dick Cavett and Merv Griffin. Who Are My Heroes? Late night talk show wars again received front page headlines when Carson's successors, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Chevy Chase, Arsenio Hall, Dennis Miller, and roman law research others engaged in fierce ratings battles after Carson's retirement.
Within the United States these talk show wars assumed epic proportions in the press, and who are my heroes essay the impact that late night entertainment talk show hosts had over their audiences seemed, at times, to assume that of political leaders or leaders of state. In an age in which political theorists had become increasingly pessimistic about the possibilities of democracy within the public sphere, late night talk show hosts became sanctioned court jesters who appeared free to mock and question basic American values and political ideas through humor. Edition? Throughout the my heroes, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s Johnny Carson's monologue on the Tonight show was considered a litmus test of public opinion, a form of commentary on the news. Jay Leno's and David Letterman's comic commentary continued the tradition. The ratings battle between Leno and Letterman in the early 1990s echoed the earlier battles between Carson, Dick Cavett, and Griffin. Roland Barthes? But it was not just comic ability that was demanded of the late night hosts. Who Are My Heroes? They had to possess a lively, quick-paced interview technique, a persistent curiosity arising directly from their comic world views, lively conversational skills, and an ability to listen and investment elicit information from a wide range of show business and civilian guests. Who Are? It was no wonder that a relatively small number of these hosts survived more than a few years on the air to become stars. Indeed, in all categories of the television talk show over four decades on the air, there were less than three dozen news and entertainment talk show hosts who achieved the status of stars.
While entertainment/variety talk dominated late night television, and edition the mixed public affairs/entertainment audience participation talk shows with hosts like Phil Donahue and essay Oprah Winfrey increasingly came filled daytime hours, prime time remained almost exclusively devoted to harlem renaissance thesis drama. While talk show hosts represent a potpourri of styles and approaches, the number of talk show formats is actually quite limited. For example, a general interest hard news or public affairs show can be built around an expert panel ( Washington Week in essay Review) , a panel and news figure ( Meet the paper discrimination, Press ), a magazine format for a single topic (Nightline ), a magazine format that deals with multiple topics ( Sixty Minutes ), or a one-on-one host/guest interview (Bill Moyers' World of Ideas ). These are the essay, standard formats for the discussion of edition, hard news topics. Similarly, a general interest soft news talk show that mixes entertainment, news and public affairs can also be built around a single topic ( Donahue, Oprah , and Geraldo ), a magazine multiple topic format ( Today, Good Morning America ), or a one-on-one host/guest interview ( Barbara Walters Interview Special ). Who Are Essay? There are also special interest news/information formats that focus on such subjects as economics ( Wall Street Week ), sports ( Sports Club ), homemaking/fashion ( Ern Westmore Show ), personal psychology ( Dr. Ruth ), home repair ( This Old House ), literature ( Author Meets the Critic ), and cooking ( Julia Childs ). Entertainment talk shows are represented by dissertation, a similarly limited number of formats. By far the most prevalent is the essay, informal celebrity guest/host talk show, which takes on different characteristics depending upon what part of the day it is broadcast. The late night entertainment talk show, with the roland barthes narrative essay, publicity it received through the talk show wars, grew rapidly in my heroes essay popularity among viewers during its first four decades on the air. But there have also been morning versions of the informal host/guest entertainment variety show ( Will Rodgers Jr. Show ), daytime versions ( The Robert Q. Lewis Show ), and special topic versions ( American Bandstand ). Some entertainment talk shows have featured comedy through satirical takes on talk shows ( Fernwood Tonight, The Larry Sanders Show ), monologues ( The Henry Morgan Show ), or comedy dialogue ( Dave and Charley ). Some game shows have been built sufficiently around their talk that they are arguably talk shows in disguise ( Groucho Marx's You Bet Your Life , for instance). Investment? There are also a whole range of my heroes essay, shows that are not conventionally known as talk shows but feature fresh talk and are built primarily around that talk.
These shows center on social encounters or events adapted to television: a religious service ( Life is law research paper, Worth Living ), an academic seminar ( Seminar ), a talent contest ( Talent Scouts ), a practical joke (Candid Camera ), mating rituals ( The Dating Game) , a forensic event ( People's Court ), or a mixed social event ( House Party) . The line between television talk and what formally constitutes a talk show is often not easy to draw and my heroes shifts over time as new forms of television talk emerge. How To Read a Television Talk Show. There are many ways approaches to understanding a television talk show. It may be viewed as a literary narrative, for instance, or as a social text. As literary texts, talk shows contain characters, settings, and gender even a loosely defined plot structure which re-enacts itself each evening in the talk rituals that take place in front of the camera. Who Are Essay? These narratives center on the host as the central recurring character who frames and organizes the talk.
Literary analysis of talk shows is relatively rare, but Michael Arlen's essay on the talk show in gender discrimination The Camera Age , or Kenneth Tynan's profile of Johnny Carson in my heroes The New Yorker , are superb examples of this approach. Talk shows can also be seen as social texts. Talk shows are indeed forums in which society tests out and comes to terms with the topics, issues and themes that define its basic values, what it means to be a citizen, a participating member of that society. The talk television shows of Phil Donahue, Oprah Winfrey become microcosms of management, society as cutting-edge social and cultural issues are debated and my heroes discussed. By the early 1990s political and social analysts began to roman law research pay increasing attention to these forms of television and essay a number of articles were written about them.
Though new hosts and talk shows often appear in rapid succession, usually following expansion cycles in the industry, significant changes in television talk occur more slowly. Edition? These changes have traditionally come about at the hands of a relatively small number of essay, influential talk show hosts and dissertation programmers and have occurred within distinct periods of television history. Cycles of my heroes, Talk: The History of the Television Talk Show. The term talk show was a relatively late invention, coming into use in investment the mid-1960s, but shows based on who are various forms of spontaneous talk were a staple of edition, broadcasting from its earliest days. Radio talk shows of one kind or another made up 24% of who are essay, all radio programming from l927 to l956, with general variety talk, audience participation, human interest, and panel shows comprising as much as 40-60% of the daytime schedule. Network television from 1949 to 1973 filled over half its daytime program hours with talk programming, devoting 15 to 20% of its evening schedule to talk shows of one kind or another. As the networks went into decline, their viewership dropping from narrative 90% to 65% of the who are my heroes, audience in the 1980s and early 1990s, talk shows were one form of harlem renaissance thesis, programming that continued to expand on the networks and in syndication. By the who are, summer of renaissance thesis, 1993 the television page of USA Today listed seventeen talk shows and local papers as many as twenty-seven.
In all, from essay 1948 to 1993 over two hundred talk shows appeared on the air. These shows can be broken down into investment management, four cycles of television talk show history corresponding to four major periods of who are my heroes essay, television history itself. The first cycle took place from 1948-62 and featured such hosts as Arthur Godfrey, Dave Garroway, Edward R. Murrow, Arlene Francis, and Jack Paar. These hosts had extensive radio experience before coming to television and edition they were the founders of television talk. During this time the talk show's basic forms--coming largely out of previous radio and who are my heroes stage traditions--took shape. The second cycle covers the period from management 1962 to 1972 when the networks took over from sponsors and who are my heroes advertising agencies as the dominant forces in talk programming. A small but vigorous syndicated talk industry grew during this period as well. Edition? In the 1960s and early 1970s three figures established themselves on the networks as talk hosts with staying power: Johnny Carson, Barbara Walters, and Mike Wallace. Each was associated with a program that became an established profit center for their network and each used that position to negotiate the who are my heroes essay, sustained status with the network that propelled them into the 1970s and 1980s as a star of television talk. The third cycle of television talk lasted from 1970 to 1980. During this decade challenges to network domination arose from a number of quarters.
While the networks themselves were initiating few new talk shows by 1969, syndicated talk programming exploded. Roman Law Research? Twenty new talk shows went on my heroes essay the air in 1969 (up to then the average number of new shows rarely exceeded five). It was a boom period for television talk--and the time of the first nationally publicized talk show wars. New technologies of production (cheaper television studios and management production costs), new methods of distribution (satellite transmission and my heroes cable), and harlem renaissance key regulatory decisions by the FCC made nationally syndicated talk increasingly profitable and attractive to investors. Talk show hosts like Phil Donahue took advantage of the situation.
Expanding from 40 markets in 1974 to a national audience of 167 markets in 1979, Donahue became the nation's number one syndicated talk show host by the late 1970s. Other new talk show hosts entered the field as well. Who Are My Heroes Essay? Bill Moyers' Journal went on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in 1970, and investment management William Buckley's Firing Line, which had appeared previously in syndication, went on PBS a year later. Both Moyers and Buckley, representing liberal and conservative viewpoints respectively, were to remain significant figures on public broadcasting for who are essay, the next two decades. During this time independent stations and station groups, first run syndication, cable and roland narrative VCR's began to weaken the networks' once invincible hold over national audiences. The fourth cycle of who are my heroes essay, television talk took place in the period from barthes essay 1980 to 1992, a period that has been commonly referred to as the post-network era. Donahue's success in who are essay syndication was emulated by others, most notably Oprah Winfrey, whose Donahue-style audience participation show went into national syndication in 1986.
Winfrey set a new record for syndication earnings, grossing over a hundred million dollars a year from the start of investment, her syndication. She became, financially, the most successful talk show host on my heroes television. By the early 1980s the edition, networks were vigorously fighting back. Late Night with David Letterman and Ted Koppel's Nightline were two network attempts to win back audiences. Both shows gained steady ratings over who are essay, time and established Koppel and Letterman as stars of television talk. Out of each of these cycles of television talk preeminent talk show hosts emerged.
Following the careers of these hosts allows us to we see how talk shows are built from renaissance within by strong personalities and effective production teams, and shaped from without by powerful economic, technological, and cultural forces. Regis Philbin and who are my heroes essay Kathie Lee Gifford. Paradigm Shifts in gender Late Night Entertainment: Carson to Letterman. Johnny Carson, for thirty years the who are, King of Late Night, and his successor, David Letterman, were in many ways alike. Their rise to fame could be described by the same basic story. A young man from investment management America's heartland comes to the city, making his way through its absurdities and frustrations with feckless humor. This exemplary middle American is square and at essay, the same time sophisticated, innocent, though ironic and irreverent. Straddling the worlds of common sense and show business, the young man becomes a national jester--and is edition, so anointed by the press. The type Johnny Carson and David Letterman represent can be traced to earlier archetypes: the Yankee character in who are early American theater and the Toby character of nineteenth century tent repertory.
Carson brought his version of this character to television at harlem renaissance, the end of the Eisenhower and beginning of the Kennedy era, poking fun at American consumerism and who are my heroes essay politics in the late 1950s and 1960s. Letterman brought his own version of dissertation outline chapter, this sharp-eyed American character to the television screen two decades later at the beginning of the my heroes essay, Reagan era. By this time the youth revolts in the 1960s and 1970s were already on the wane, and Letterman replaced the politics of confrontation represented by renaissance, the satire of such shows as Saturday Night Live and SCTV with a politics of accommodation, removal, and irony. His ironic stance was increasingly acknowledged as capturing the voice of his generation and, whether as cause or effect, Letterman became a generational symbol. The shift from Carson to Letterman represented not only a cultural change but a new way of looking at television as a medium. Carson's camera was rooted in the neutral gaze of the proscenium arch tradition; Letterman's camera roamed wildly and flamboyantly through the studio. Carson acknowledged the camera with sly asides; Letterman's constant, neurotic intimacy with the camera, characterized by his habit of moving right up to the lens and speaking directly into my heroes, it, represented a new level of self-consciousness about the medium. He extended the self-referentiality that Carson himself had promoted over the years on his talk show.
Indeed, Letterman represented a movement from what has been called a transparent form of television (the viewer taking for roman law research, granted and looking through the forms of television: camera, lighting, switching, etc.) to an opaque form in which the technology and practices of the who are my heroes essay, medium itself become the focus of the show. Investment Management? Letterman changed late night talk forever with his post-modern irreverence and mocking play with the forms of television talk. Paradigm Shifts in the Daytime Audience Participation Talk Show: Donahue to Winfrey. When Oprah Winfrey rose to national syndication success in 1986 by challenging Phil Donahue in major markets around the country and winning ratings victories in many of these markets, she did not change the format of the who are my heroes, audience participation talk show. That remained essentially as Donahue had established it twenty years before. What changed was the cultural dynamics of this kind of show and that in turn was a direct reflection of the person who hosted it. The ratings battle that ensued in 1986 was between a black woman raised by a religious grandmother and strict father within the fold of a black church in the South against a white, male, liberal, Catholic Midwesterner who had gone to Notre Dame and roland been permanently influenced by the women's movement. As Jackie Robinson had broken baseball's color barrier four decades earlier, Oprah Winfrey broke the color line for national television talk show hosts in 1986. She became one of the great Horatio Alger rags-to-riches story of the 1980s (by the early 1990s People Weekly was proclaiming her the richest woman in show business with an estimated worth of $200 million), and as Arsenio Hall and who are Bob Costas ended their six and seven year runs on television in the early 1990s, it became clear that Oprah Winfrey had staying power.
She remained one of the few prominent talk show hosts of the 1980s to survive within the cluttered talk show landscape of mid-1990s. Several factors contributed to this success. For one thing, Winfrey had a smart management team and a full-press national marketing campaign to catapult her into competition with Donahue. The national syndication deal had been worked out by harlem renaissance, Winfrey' representative, attorney-manager Jeffrey Jacobs, and King World's marketing plan was a classic one. Executives at King World felt the media would pounce on a war with Donahue so they created one. The first step was to send tapes of my heroes, Oprah's shows to focus groups in several localities to investment see how they responded. The results were positive.
The next step was to show tapes to selected station groups--small network alliances of a half-dozen or more stations under a single owner. These groups would be offered exclusive broadcast rights. As the reactions began to come in, King World adjusted its tactics. Rather than making blanket offers, they decided to open separate negotiations in each city and market. The gamble paid off. Winfrey's track record proved her a hot enough commodity to win better deals through individual station negotiation. To launch Winfrey on the air King World kicked off a major advertising campaign. Media publications trumpeted Oprah's ratings victories over Donahue in my heroes Baltimore and dissertation chapter 1 Chicago. The Donahue-buster strategy was tempered by Winfrey herself, who worked hard not to appear too arrogant or conceited.
When asked about head-on competition with Donahue she replied that in a majority of markets she did not compete with him directly and who are essay that while Donahue would certainly remain the king, she just wanted to be a part of the 1, monarchy. By the time The Oprah Winfrey Show went national in September of 1986 it had been signed by over 180 stations--less than Donahue's 200-plus but approaching that number. As well as refined marketing and advertising techniques, cultural issues also featured prominently in essay Winfrey's campaign. Management? Winfrey's role as talk show host was inseparable from her identity as an African American woman. Who Are My Heroes Essay? Her African American heritage and roots surfaced frequently in press accounts. One critic described her in a 1986 Spy magazine article as capaciously built, black, and extremely noisy.
These and thesis other comments on her black style were not lost on essay Winfrey. She confronted with the investment, issue of race constantly and who are my heroes was very conscious of her image as an African American role model. When a USA Today reporter queried Winfrey bluntly about the issue of race in August of edition, 1986, asking her as someone who is not pencil-thin, white, nor blond, how she was transcending barriers that have hindered many in television, Winfrey replied as follows: I've been able to do it because my race and gender have never been an who are, issue for me. I've been blessed in knowing who I am, and I am a part of a great legacy. I've crossed over on the backs of Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Tubman, and Fannie Lou Hamer, and Madam C.J.
Walker. Because of them I can now soar. Because of them I can now live the dream. Winfrey's remarks represent the double-voiced identity of many successful African American public figures. Such figures, according to Henry Louis Gates, demonstrate 'his or her own membership in the human community and then . Barthes? resistance to that community.' In the mid-1980s, then, the image of Oprah Winfrey as national talk show host played against both white and black systems of values and aesthetics.
It was her vitality as a double-sign, not simply her role as an Horatio Alger figure, that made her compelling to a national audience in the United States. Hosts like Letterman and who are essay Winfrey played multiple roles. They were simultaneously star performers, managing editors, entrepreneurs, cultural symbols and edition setters of social trends. Of all the star performers who dot the landscape of television, the talk show host might have the essay, most direct claim to renaissance thesis the film director's status as auteur. Hosts like Letterman and Winfrey had to constantly re-invent themselves, in the words of Kenneth Tynan, to sustain themselves within the highly competitive world of network television.
The talk show, like the my heroes essay, daily newspaper, is often considered a disposable form. Outline Chapter 1? The first ten years of Johnny Carson's Tonight shows, for who are, example, were erased by NBC without any thought to future use. Scholars have similarly neglected talk shows. News and drama offered critics from the arts, humanities, and social sciences at least a familiar place to gender discrimination begin their studies. Talk shows were different, truly synthetic creations of television as a medium. Nonetheless, talk shows have become increasingly important on television and their hosts increasingly influential. Interrogators on who are essay the news or clown princes and jesters on entertainment talk shows, major television hosts have a license to question and mock--as long as they play within the rules.
